SARAH

THE SKY CONTAINED A SMATTERING OF LIGHT IN THE DIStance that Sarah made out as one blurred line over an icy expanse. She led Tic-Tac to the settlement even after he protested that he knew the way. “I don’t want you to have to walk back alone,” he had said.

“Maybe I won’t walk back at all,” she said. The bright spark of hope glimmered in his eye and gave her more joy than she remembered having since they first got together. That glint in his eye made her hope that the statement could be more than a maybe and turn into truth.

“I remember that look,” she said.

“What look?” he asked.

“You used to look up at James that way when he read.”

“I remember. I know.”

“There was that look again, just now, when I told you I might stay—that same hopeful look. I think that is what was missing from you.”

“The look, I know.”

“No,” Sarah said. “Hope.”
